Firestorm the Nuclear Man #5

(DC)
November 1978

Good Guy: Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond/Martin Stein)
Bad Guys: The Hyena / Multiplex (Danton Black)

Cameos: Cliff Carmichael, Doreen Day

Overview

"Again: Multiplex"

Firestorm is set upon by the Hyena after he stops a mob theft. Every time the cops are mentioned the Hyena goes a little crazy (from issue #4). Firestorm defeats the Hyena but is hit from behind by the mob bosses son, “Spit” Shine, who has been watching the fight from his car.

Spit captures the unconscious Hyena and takes him back to the headquarters where… the Hyena escapes.

Ronnie takes Doreen to the newspaper where his father works and he discovers that his father hasn’t been a reporter for twenty years and that he had lied to him. On the way home from the paper Doreen and Ronnie bump in to Multiplex, who has just escaped from hospital, in the Subway. He is draining electrical power from the tracks in order to gain his multiplication powers back.

Martin has hired a private detective to follow him to see where he goes during his ‘blackouts’. While they’re having some drinks, too many for Martin, Ronnie summons Firestorm.

A drunk Firestorm defeats Multiplex by giving him too much power than he can handle and multiplying him a thousand fold. The end sequence shows that Firestorm did not defeat the original Multiplex just one of his clones and that now the Hyena and Multiplex have teamed up.

Overall Rating: 6/10

A worthwhile read but not as enjoyable as issue three. On the last page we see that the next issue was to have Typhoon as the villain and that it was to be on sale in the first week of September. This never came to pass as the first volume was cancelled after this issue. I believe the Typhoon issue may not have been released until Firestorm (Vol 2) #8 in 1983, which was the first Firestorm book I ever read.
.
Upon research I found out that the Typhoon issue was in fact a different story and is referred to as No.6 and is one of many stories in the big "Cancelled Comics Cavalcade" issue. Which I think there were two issues of in the late seventies.

Firestorm the Nuclear Man #3

(DC)
June 1978

Good Guy: Firestorm
Bad Gal: Killer Frost

Cameos: Cliff Carmichael, Doreen Day

Overview

"Kiss not the lips of Killer Frost"

Writer: Gerry Conway
Pencils: Al Milgrom

Firestorm’s third adventure. I have had the first two issues for quite awhile and enjoyed them and I finally got a copy of the third issue yesterday and read it last night.

Firestorm’s dual personalities Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein are just beginning to come to grips with being Firestorm. Every time they merge Martin cannot remember what has just occurred and believes he is experiencing major blackouts.

After using Firestorm to scare Cliff Carmichael, a student who has been hassling Ronnie, they separate leaving Martin dazed. He arrives late at the airport.

Martin, and his experimental condenser, travel to “Mohole One” in the arctic. There he meets his former pupil Crystal Frost, one of the chief designers of Mohole One, and she tells him that she loves him. When Martin shuns her, she tells him to go join the rest of the men and accidently locks herself in the ‘Thermafrost’ chamber.

Crystal Frost becomes Killer Frost who can emit ice from her body as she absorbs heat. She kisses Martin and as she does so instigates the Firestorm merger. Ronnie is transported from his basketball match to the arctic.

A battle ensues and Firestorm eventually overcomes Killer Frost by using his molecular powers to create a refrigeration chamber around her. In doing so Killer Frost can no longer absorb heat and becomes an ice cube.

Overall Rating: 9/10

As a big fan of Firestorm, I found this extremely entertaining. The origin of the original Killer Frost didn’t disappoint - it was great fun.

"A Choice of Dooms"

Writer: Jim Valentino
Pencils: Ron Frenz

The Silver Surfer is infected with a sentinent virus from an unknown attacker. In a fevered state the Surfer destroys a Pheragot energy refinery thinking it is a monster.

The Pheragot’s send a team to investigate while the Surfer battles to control his actions as an unknown voice manipulates him. After the Surfer passes out battling asteroids (??), the Pheragot’s analyse his body and tell him he is suffering Hlavac’s disease and that there is only one known cure and that is to ingest the entire radioactive ore on the planet Aedi which would lead to its destruction.

The Surfer refuses to cause such devastation and rides out to die. He remembers yoga taught to him by Dr.Strange and he expels the viral sentinent out of his body.

Mephisto is revealed to be the unknown attacker.

Overall Rating: 8/10

Typically great art from Ron Frenz. A hidden gem, well worth a read.

Review

"Panic on Pier One"

Spider-Man questions Ghost Riders methods “We’re supposed to be the good guys, mister – We’re supposed to be better than the filth we fight!” and with that the Ghost Rider says “I am what I am” and burns off into the distance.

Overall Rating: 7/10

Not a bad read, good battles and chase scenes. Not much of a plot but who needs a plot when you’ve got some great fight sequences? Recommended for Ghost Rider fans.

Review

"Bright Lights….Bitter City"

Story & Art: Howard Mackie & John Byrne

Peter and MJ are having marital problems. MJ is receiving death threats on both her and Peter’s life. MJ is a high profile model and Peter is struggling to make ends meet as a Daily Bugle photographer.

JJJ asks Peter to see if he can get an exclusive interview for the Bugle with MJ. As it is an excuse to see her, and get their marriage back on track, he accepts.

Security, refuse to let Peter in, stating that he couldn't possibly be MJ’s husband. After receiving another threat on her life, MJ and Jill Stacy are herded out a side exit. Peter’s Spider-Sense goes haywire and he leaps the security to warn MJ.

Security, surround Peter thinking he is the attempted murderer. Out of nowhere the Blob comes out of an armored vehicle and creates havoc.

A fight ensues and Spidey defeats the Blob. After finishing with the Blob he chases after MJ and saves her from an exploding bomb near where she and Jill have been driving. Story ends.

Overall Rating: 6/10

I enjoyed seeing the Blob in a Spidey comic, although I think Spidey took care of him a little too easily. The artwork was good and it is a reasonably enjoyable read.
